Things I've picked up along the way...

Pretty medieval manuscript of the day is an illustration of the crucifixion from a Book of Hours from the Spencer Collection at the New York Public Library. All the full-page illuminations in this book are surrounded by a border of branches. Their rough surface contrasts with the smooth wood of the cross. The sinister, shadowy figures of the Roman soldiers fill the background.
