Pretty medieval manuscript of the day depicts Charlemagne meeting Pope Hadrian I. This depiction portrays Charlemagne rushing to Rome to protect the pope (in 772). This image probably dates from the fifteenth century. With the conclave starting tomorrow, I’m already wondering what name Benedict’s successor will choose. Maybe Hadrian will make a comeback?
