Pretty medieval manuscript of the day isn’t a manuscript… it’s the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Today is the feast day of Aelred of Hexham, abbot of Rievaulx. I’ve been running this blog for a while now, so we’ve already looked at what I believe is the only Creative Commons licensed manuscript image of Aelred, so today you’ll just have to make do with this beautiful photograph of the Cistercian abbey where he rose from novice to abbot.
If you’ve never visited Rievaulx, I urge you to at your earliest opportunity. It is in a beautiful spot in the middle of lovely Yorkshire, not far from Helmsley Castle and York. You can lose hours exploring the ruined abbey and admiring the pretty medieval floor tiles.

End of the day (25/9/12) St. Lawrence Evesham
Some more lovely photographs from the Churches Conservation Trust:
Inside St. Lawrence, it was the south chapel that constantly vied for my attention.
No matter where I went, my mind often spent significant moments trying to persuade my trigger hand to push the lens into its direction.
Lit up like a lantern, designated by light, set apart by shimmering spandrels, and ribs extruded by deep cut shadows.
Another photograph from the archives at Cornell University. This one is of the Bodleian Library (Old Schools Quadrangle), although it is mislabelled on Flickr as Brasenose College. I know it’s the Bodleian, because I used to work there! The tower is known as the tower of the five orders, because it showcases different architectural styles.
The photograph is thought to date from between 1865 and 1885.

I love this photograph of St Paul’s Cathedral. It is from the archive of Cornell University in the US. The photographer’s name is unrecorded, but the image is from a collection donated to the University by Andrew Dickson White, one of the institution’s co-founders. He loved architecture, and amassed a huge personal library on the subject.
This image dates from between around 1865-1885.

Basilique St Denis, Paris. I had such a lovely time in Paris last weekend. I had St Denis almost to myself… I think December might just be the best time to visit the French capital, as it was so much quieter than in the summer.

Ste Chapelle, Paris. One of the loveliest places I visited last weekend.
